Default Nokian WR Tyres and Average MPG.

I have now covered 38945 miles (approx 62675 km) on a set of Nokian WR Tyres.
Two of the tyres stiil have 7mm tread left and the other two have 6mm tread remaining. (These tyres start with 11mm tread).

They were first fitted to my XC90 D5 MY2005 and covered 23120 miles and then re-fitted to my XC90 D5 MY2007 which has travelled 15827 miles so far.

The topic of fuel consumption keeps coming up on Volvo Forums and I thought that I would give my findings, so far, regarding the XC90 D5 MY2007.

Since picking up the vechicle last September, I have not reset the Average MPG and checking it today, it gives a reading of 35.9mpg. (Just returned from a trip to Northern Italy)
Fortunately, I do not have to do short runs or much town driving.

I very satisfied with the fuel consumption, but the Nokian Tyres are something else, they wear, but at a very slow rate.
Anyone who is due to replace tyres, should consider these tyres.
I have just checked the price on www.mytyres.co.uk and the Nokian WR Sport Utility 235/60 R18 107V XL (Wi) are £98.30 each, inc Vat and delivery.

I hope the above helps.

How are the Nokians for noise? Just came across this article on the Auto Express web page....

Motorists opting for low-noise rubber would automatically be dropped down one vehicle excise duty band, if recommendations wheeled out by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) get the go-ahead.

The discounts would be similar to those offered to drivers of low-emissions vehicles - and owners could also be exempt from congestion charging. The recommendations were based on the TRL's recent Government-funded research into the impact of noise pollution.

Buyers would be able to identify the new eco-friendly tyres by a labelling system, similar to those found on washing machines and other energy-efficient household goods.

The report suggests: "Manufacturers could stamp the words 'low noise' on the tyre sidewall, which shows it meets a certain sound threshold." Similar schemes are already proving successful in Germany and Scandinavia.

Tyres are currently given a limit of up to 76 decibels (dB), depending on size. But the move would add a new bracket for those producing as little as 71dB of noise by 2010. Government scientists are also looking at other ways to bring down the noise caused by rolling rubber. Options that are being considered include improving the state of road surfaces and fitting more cars with pressure monitors, as underinflation tends to increase tyre noise.

I noticed no differance in noise level when changing from the Conti's to the Nokians.

I have checked the data sheet for the Nokians and no noise levels are mentioned.

I forgot to mention in previous post that I run the tyre pressures at Volvo's ECO settings - 270 KPa on all 4 tyres and only reduce pressure if I know that I will be driving through snow/slush, etc.

Tell me more.... where did you find out about the ECO setting and what do they say about it?

Great, It's OK to put even higher pressures in my tyres. That's 39psi all round then.

The day before you posted I ordered some Vredestein Wintrac 4 Extremes because I was looking for something with some off road performance but the Nokians were on my short list. The range of 18" tyres for the XC90 is fairly limited, especially with off road capability,so I might bite the bullet one day and get some 17" rims to get a bit more choice. I'll post when I get some wear figures for the Vredesteins.

Volvo ECO Tyre Pressures?

That accounts for why I havn't seen it. It's not in the 2003 Manual.

36psi Front and 39psi rear are the max shown on my fuel flap.

6% reduction in rolling resistance equals 1% reduction if fuel consumtion. Auto Express tested 15 tyres (Not the Nokian) and found a 6% fuel consumption difference, on the same car, between the best and worst.

Just for the record we've got some vredestein snow tyres, living in cumbria we wanted something that we could use all year round, rain, snow, sleet and sun.

They've been on the car for 2 and half years, been up and down the m6/m1 a couple of times, driven over fields, and we don't swap them over in the summer (we got pelted with hail yesterday so we know better than to assume summer means heat up here, yes yesterday was in June).

There's no sign of wear although we've only done about 10k on them. but 10k including fields and treacherous mountain roads.

We considered the nokians at the same time but went for the vredesteins in the end. Noticed that we don't seem to leave a spray trail when it's pelting with rain and they really are good on snow and ice.

Just thought I'd share in case this helps anyone.

can't help with comparisons on MPG though as ours are on an old 240 (yes I know they're worth half the value of the car

I am resurrecting this thread, as I cannot seem to find either of the Nokians mentioned in 235/60/18

Tem, Nokian now only list the following on their site:

Z SUV
and
HT SUV

Looking to replace the tyres on the XC, and now despairing!
