Default Old or new S40?

OK, here's a quick hypothetical question for you ... you've got a budget of £6k or thereabouts, and you've got a choice between a current-version 2.0D S40 with high-ish miles on it, or a slightly older S40 'Classic' 1.9D with lower miles. The condition, service history, etc. of both cars is comparable. Which do you buy, and why?

I like the style of the new S40 more than the old one. But friends of ours changed there old V40 and bought a new V50 and still prefered the old model. I would be tempted to go for the new model.
Best of luck
Jim

Smile New Style S40 or New New S40

Having just (last Friday) bought a new style S40 and having looked at plenty of old style ones, I would go for the new one every time.

As there is a facelift model just out, there are quite a few of the older (ours is July 2006 - 14k on the clock) new models out there.

We went to Stratstone Volvo in Reading and had the choice of a number of cars, all around the £9.5k mark. Admittedly that is more than you are looking to pay, but they come with 2 years Volvo warranty and ours, a silver 1.6 S has everything on it; cruise, electronic climate, winter pack (heated front seats), CD player and much more. The quality and finish is fantastic and the car looks and drives like new.

We intend to keep the car for a long time, so starting with a newish one was important. Everyone has different ideas, so you may not be thinking along the same lines.

Obviously budget dictates your choice to a large extent, but I would go for the latest, lowest mileage vehicle you can find (given FSH etc.)

Just my 10p worth, but every opinion helps you to decide your own (I hope).

Cheers,

Blakie

Hi
I had an old style S40 in a T4 which was manic an ate front tyres but great fun,the only new S40 i haven driven was a small engine model and certainly didn't set my world alight so not a fair comparison really.
The new 2.0 l diesel is pretty nippy apparently.

Do some test drives and take your time, the new S40 is highly rated by which? incidentally.
