Bought one but am such a bad charger upper that for people like me this concept will only take off when they invent a minuature fusion reactor that keeps it powered up all the time

I've never heard of a dash cam that's designed to work solely on battery power, at the very least they normally plug into the fag lighter. Can't you just hardwire it into a switched supply so that it automatically starts running when you start the car?

Who said they're all big? This is mine and it is brilliant, I'll upload some footage too! Its called Mobius and is the newest updated version with a C2 wide angle lens

The first pic it has the cradle on so you can screw the mount into the cradle to attach it to the windscreen, you can buy packages but I bought mine separate I.E camera came with a charging lead but I bought a 3 metre one and the cradle and a lead to attach to my phone so I can charge on the go and obviously SD card was separate too but it still came to less than £50 (not including SD card), just had to wait for the parts to be imported from Hong Kong BUT with a package from a UK seller you'll get it all within a couple of days, value for money is immense!

Is there a dash cam that doesn;t die or become ridiculously glitchy in the first few months of ownership.

Most of them seem to fail in under twelve months and that is if they didn;t have some major design defect from the off!

A major issue is that they can;t stand the heat of being in the windscreen on a sunny day..

I really want a rear view one seeing as what is in front of me I can generally avoid but tailgaters and the like are much harder to deal with and evade.

Seeing as the back of my V40 has been redesigned by one of these people it is quite an issue for me!

You need:
12V socket from eBay with a bit of red & black cable
3A connector block "chop block"
Small Stanley screwdriver
Pliers/snips
Scosche USB adapter (overkill for dash cam, but it's the best for stable power throughput, any will do it)
Long USB cable or extension to run up the A pillar, 5m is plenty, 3m may be enough?
Some spare 1A car cable and optional 1A inline fuse, crimp tool and crimp connectors if you're doing a pro job

Remove the gear stick assembly and surround, cut the cables to the existing 12V socket, attach the cable with the new socket in parallel via the chop block. Hide the new socket under the gear stick assembly and run the USB cable up the pillar.

Whole process takes about ten minutes

Isn't the fag lighter a permanent live? I've always taken a feed from the switched supply to the stereo, using a USB buck converter.

Look for a twin channel one! The one I posted isn't twin channel but BlackVue ones are recommended and are twin channel.

I've got a Mini 0806 dash cam, very slim and hides behind the rear view mirror. Hoping to get it hard wired in some time soon though!

It is. Switched may be necessary if the camera auto starts with ignition? If so that's a good shout.

In fact it's possible I always intended to attach another one to the stereo live - I haven't checked my to-do list for ages
