Cool Edge vs Ultra!

BITOG (BOB IS THE OIL GUY) is a very active forum with a lot of oily engineers as members. It is not biased in commercial terms, BUT does have a lot of members using Mobil one synthetics oils, which is no surprise as most members are in the USA.
They have allowed both Castrol and Pennzoil (Owned by Shell) to place approved advertising on their site. That means the various statements made in the advertising have been accepted as correct by the moderators, so it is very interesting to see them allow claims for Ultra (Shell Helix Ultra is the same as Penn Ultra made from natural gas and contains Moly, which Edge Turbo Diesel does not)
So, here are 3 links of interest if you want to keep your engine clean and minimize friction:

Moly additive basics:

Castrol Edge:

Pennzoil (Shell) Ultra:

Virgin oil analysis results for different oils:

(If you look at some figures like the NOACK, it's obvious why Ultra is good, although it also has more Zinc and Boron anti wear additives)

The last time I checked, 5 liters of Edge 5/40 (A3/B4) was 50 Euros and 5 liters of Shell Ultra 5/40 (A3/B4) was 30 Euros in Germany from a Jerrybay dealer. For comparison the cheapest major brand oil, Castrol GTX 15/40 is about 20 Euros.
In my opinion Liqui Moly Synthoil High Tech 5/40 outperforms both oils, BUT costs 60 Euros for 5 liters, which is why I stopped using it, even though it has provided the best used oil analysis for a 10K km OCI in my V40 1.9D (115 hp turbo diesel).

I'm trying Ceratac oil additive with Ultra 5/40 at the present time to see if that combination will beat the Synthoil. In the first run I only used 100ml (One third of recommended dose), but I now have 200ml in use and the left hand set of UOA results are for the 100ml dose only. Ceratec contains 2 active ingrediants, Moly and Boron Nitride, which is in the form of an ultra fine suspension of ceramic particles. It looks like cream tea when poured, rather than the normal Grey colour of pure Moly.

Note: The viscosity figures for the left row (Ultra) are low because some LM idle flush was used just before the oil change. The corrected figures produce the same results as the previous run of Edge. The comment I made in blue on RHS saying "too good post flush", is probably not relevant, as I was just thinking of a reason why the figures might have been so low. Just to double check that thought, I ran the same flush again last sample and checked on its exact contents and it would only effect the viscosity.
So that is why I think Castrol Edge is a waste of money in comparison with Shell Ultra.
