Default V70 Manual Gearbox Whine

Having had the 2002 V70 2.4 for a few weeks now, I've noticed that there is a whine coming from what I assume is the gearbox when driving. I've done some research on the interweb and there appears to be very little out there for the manual 'boxes.

The noise can't be heard on idle, and is only audible when in gears 2/3/4, and is a metallic whine that is there when accelerating and on overrun, but if you balance the throttle where its not quite doing one or the other the noise reduces.

Speaking to a Volvo breaker he said that its not all that common for the manual 'boxes to have issues (the car has 120k on the clock) and suggested that someone might have put the wrong oil in at some point, or that it had no oil in at all.

Today I drained the oil in the 'box (it was dirty and runny) and put the correct oil in, but after a short drive there's no difference sadly, so I'm a bit stumped as to what could be up.

Can anyone offer any advice on what the problem could be? I have found some information that talks of a "throwaway"? bearing in the gearbox that causes this noise, so a replacement clutch, pressure plate and bearing is needed, so could this be what's up?

Thanks for any info on the matter.
