Any other use is classed as arduous conditions. Hence I say in the UK the ATF should always be changed at 48,000 miles.

As for your main dealers comments I'd say go to a good independant.

All the best.

Roy,

Service intervals are now 18000 miles/year and there is no place in the Service Log book for a 48000 mile visit.

My last XC90 had a sticker on the windscreen saying, Service Due at 54000 miles/June 2009.

Found this:-

"Check automatic transmission fluid only if an external leak is identified. Volvo recommends
changing automatic transmission fluid at 52,500 miles, only on vehicles used for towing, or when
a message displays in the Instrument Panel Text Window.
Source: 2006 Volvo Warranty and Service Records Information, Version WTY570.05.05
Rev.05/05."
