Default S40 clunking noise

Hi all,

I appreciate how difficult/impossible it is to diagnose a problem from someone elses description, but I really need some pointers to try to locate a clunking noise from the from end of my S40.

Its a 97(R) 1.8 with c80k on the clock.

There is a 'very' annoying metallic clunking noise coming from the front end, on both smooth roads and rough roads. With the windows open trying to listen for which side it is, I can't hear it, however with the windows up it is quite distinct. To my 'untrained' ears, it sounds (and sometimes feels) like its coming from under the center console or around the bulkhead where the pedals are, its almost as if something is loose and swinging around. I have taken it to a garage who have had it up on ramps and tested the bushings, but they have given it the all clear (suspension wise).

I did have a look underneath the other day, and thought the gear linkage was quite loose, but I don't think this can be the cause, as if I drive it holding the gear lever, the clonking is still there.

I'm at a loss for what to look for next. Does anyone have any ideas or thoughts what this could be?????

Here's hoping
Neil
