Default Mirrors 1986 onward

Hi all

I have recently aquired some electric mirrors to sprouse up my 245 Gl 1987.

One of the mirriors looks brand new yet the bracket part it sits on is well manky and has been painted with some kind of hammerite making it look
C%*p. What I wanna know is. can the Mirror an surounding box I.E the bit the mirror it self is contained in be seperated from its bracket I.E the bit that you actually bolt to the car an stays flush even when you put the mirror part in so as it does not get knocked for instance.

hopefully I have not confused my question. I think you must be able to but I can't quite se how.

Any Ideas ???????????????????????????????????????????? Thanks Steve
