Clunk on take up
I know that there are various threads on Volvo clunks and this one could be any one of those clunks, but I'm really not sure.
I have a 2008 V50 2.4i with Geartronic box - 40k on the clock. Whilst driving, if I come off the accelerator so that the car coasts or slows and then press the accelerator to increase speed again, the car makes a 'pop'/ 'clunk' noise. I think it comes from somewhere in front of the drivers footwell and definitely seems drivetrain related - as soon as slack is taken up. At first, you think it only happens in 4th gear, but I can now hear it in all gears. Moving the gearstick whilst stationary between P-R-N-D reproduces a similar clunk. Has anyone got any ideas before I give up on this car - the noise is bloomin' annoying. Many Thanks |

My first check would be the rear lower engine mount, very common to become weak regardless of age/mileage and allow to much engine movement. It's quite a cheap job <£70.00 at a garage.
Selecting the gears while stationary will 'load up' the engine and make it twist on its mounts, same effect coming on/off the gas. If it is the mount then try to act quickly as too much engine movement can put stress onto hoses, wiring and the exhaust downpipe which is expensive. Well worth checking out I think.

Thanks for the info.
I'll have a look at it and see. Having just googled it and read some of the results, it sounds similar to what I am experiencing. I have a 4 post ramp (I have a classic car that I work on). Would this be an easy job to undertake myself? Many Thanks Terry |

Update on this issue:
Lower engine mount now replaced. It was actually a fairly easy job and took me less than 20 minutes to replace. The old mount didn't seem too bad however there was lots of movement in it compared to the new mount. The issue is that the noise hasn't gone. In fact, it now seems slightly louder than it did before. I'm going to try and take it back to the dealership again, however, they wouldn't do anything because Volvo Selekt had told them it wasn't a warranty issue as 'no part had failed'. Apparently, until something fails they won't authorise any warranty work - I was told to 'turn up the radio volume' to hide the noise! I'm still convinced that the noise is coming from the front right wheel. Any further ideas? |

The noise ended up disappearing - strange. It appeared to get worse after installing the new mount and then, all of a sudden, gone!
Must have been something to do with the mount I suspect. |

That's good, maybe everything settled down now after the new mount found its own resting place etc. hope it stays ok.
