Here's an alternative that works for me.
The suction mounts I agree are ugly and as well as obscuring your view also advertise the fact you have a sat-nav.
I have a TomTom 1, and I have found that using the suction mount, but right at the top of the windscreen beside the rear view mirror on the driver side gives the multiple benifits of not being seen from outside the car, (sunstrip and blackened area around the rain sensor etc) is in the natural place your eyes are used to flicking to using the mirror, and does not get in the way of looking at the road!
The power lead I have extended and run inside the roof lining accross to the N/S "A" post.
