Brake's on a 1995 440
Hi all just after some help again!. First can anybody tell me if a 1995 440 1.8 si should have vented or solid front discs? My brakes feel ok but not what I think allround discs should feel like, even though a new set of pads and discs was fitted to the rear only 3500ish miles ago (when a full service was also done). the current front discs are solid and look in fair condition but I would like to replace them anyway, but shopping arount there seem to be 2 types for the 440 1.8 (vented & solid).Can I change to vented for better performance?. also is it an easy job to replace them yourself? (i have a haynes book and am ok at straight forward jobs).
Second, I have an annoying rattle coming from what sounds like the drivers door, anybody ever had anything similar and what is it??? Many thanks all for any help you can offer! Richard |

Unfortunately the bad news is, that the car comes with solid front discs only. The conversion that you refer to is to use the 440 turbo front calipers and new vented discs. If you really have the money (Especially after Christmas!! :-)) the best set up on the "Cheap" is to install the ECP (Euro **Spit** Cough** Ahem!!!**) ATE Powerdiscs (vented), and "Greenstuff" Front pads along with Dot 5.1 Fluid,Turbo Calipers and Goodridge Braided hoses. Unfortunately you won't get much change out of about £500 quid, but it is the cheapest route and will give you MORE than Satisfactory stopping power, you'll feel safer too:-)

Wow, thats more expensive than I thought! :). local lsuk centre had a quick look and thought that most probobly there is air in the system (this explains the spongy feel) and to get the system bled and see how it feels, if not it could be a sticking caliper as they think the pads are wearing uneven. car brakes straight so i'll try to get the system bled at some point.
P.s I think I might have found my rattle, after finding nothing behind the door panel!, I noticed that the mounting bolt for the engine movement damper (B18U engine) is loose, but it is the end near the bulkhead that is loose, worse luck as getting under the thing with somthing to hold the nut while I tighten the bolt is impossible. anyone any ideas? He..he...he, yeah it is a large amount of outlay for better brakes, but it's "How serious are you?" question, if you're really serious about stopping power, then a Brembo or Wilmwood conversion is the one to go for, @ £500 for a pair of calipers alone (Although the stopping quality is IMMENSE!! YeeeeHaaa!!!!:-) :-)) then you can expect to not get alot of change out of £1k !!! :-(
The Breakdown for the "Cheaper" Conversion is as Follows: Secondhand calipers + recon = £175 Discs = £50+vat the pair, from GSF. Pads = £70 Braided hoses = £120 Dot 5.1 brake fluid = £30 per gallon. Do all that, and you won't go far wrong, and you will be impressed with the stopping abilty of your vehicle!! :-) :-) To go the dearer option will see you around the £1000 mark, then we're into specialist territory, with different grades of pad, style of disc/disc material, brake fluids etc etc. It all depends on the style of driving you want to do and where you want to carry it out, are you the quarter mile chappie, or the track day man or just the normal daily driver that wants to improve the braking power of his car.
