I'm pretty sure that 340's & 360's shared exactly the same shell, it was just that the Volvo red-block was shoe-horned in & the Renault 1.4's & 1.7's slotted in with ease. I also think that the 360's only had the 2.0Ltr engine, not the 2.3?

I would go with the 360 if I had a choice. My dad had a 360GLS model? and this I think had a 2 litre volvo lump. It was quite nippy!! If I had the choice it would be a volvo engine. James

the renault clio 1.7 engine seems to be a popular swap on the 340!
but a 2.3 turbo in a 360 would be nice. have a look on www.driftworks.co.uk, lots of 3** with different engines in. 340 with a 4age 20v in would be like a cheap swedish AE86! |

The 360 2L is by no means shoehorned in, there is plenty of working space around the engine.
1.7 is a nice modern engine but very unreliable IMO, the 1.4 is less refined but is reliable although the Engines don't last much more than 130K. The 360 uses most of the Engine and gearbox from the 200/700/900 so that part of it lasts forever. The body however is not hot dip galvanised like the 700/900 so does not last aswell. The 300 series do have a few fixible problems but they are great little cars. The bigger volvos are more robust and last longer, but use more fuel. |

Hi there, and welcome.
If you get a 360 GLT (2.0 injection), it's pretty fast and sporty as standard. You may find it does not need to be modified, but various upgrades from the bigger Volvos which use basically the same engine (called the redblock) are possible, including turbocharged versions. Carb 360s (still 2.0 Volvo) are also pretty good as are 1.7 340s. You'll probably find that a 1.4 340 needs more power. There are various Renault-based tuning options for the 340s, including fitting the excellent 16v Renault engine. I suggest you talk to Foggyjames on here. He's a 300 guru and knows both 340 and 360 modification options well. Plenty of modded 340s and 360s around to get inspirariojn from, if you search the forums. Good luck, and let us know what you buy! John |
