Default Starter motor for 940

Hi, im new to this site and would be very grateful if anyone could help me. I know very little about mechanics so i will appologise now for my stupidity. I have just bought a 940 diesel, after only one week the starter motor has failed.
I have a friend who is a mechanic who will work on the car but he isnt available to ask for advice today. I have found a starter motor in a local rec yard, however it is for a petrol 940, I just wondered if this would be compatable? iAny advice would be appreciated.

If the diesel engine in your 940 is the standard motor, it will be the VW/AUDI/VAG 6-cyl unit. I do not think that the starter motor from a petrol engined 940 will be a suitable unit - the Volvo petrol engine will probably have a different fixing (but I am willing to be corrected on this).

hi again
unless you are 100% certain that the cambelt has been changed . get it done now you can inspect it by removeing the 3 clips that hold the cambelt cover just behind the fan blades . . . i have read all to many of these belts snaping. result is engine is partly destroyed . . i get mine changed at no more than 60000 miles . with the belt tensioner and belt idler . if your car has done 150000 miles . most have now . change water pump too. sorry if im a bit negative but thats the one big weakness with this car . otherwise bullet proof

Default starter

There's one on a well known auction site for £39, which is good value.

Thank you so much everyone who replied. Just to let you know my lovely friend managed to get the starter motor working again, however after closer inspection everything else under the bonnet is very poorly! It is 18 years old and has done 185,000 miles I'm not going to give up on him just yet though!
