Post OBD11 Code P01012

Hi,

My P2 2.0L LPT is showing P0102 again.

This is apparently low voltage (ergo, air flow) at the MAF sensor.

When I got the car the hose from the inner wheel arch to the filter box was rotten (there'd been a problem with a battery somewhere in the car's previous life). I picked up a replacement from a forum member but it was from a non-turbo model. One possibility is that it's throttling the airflow.

Another is that the MAF's dirty. It looks to be in its own little cage (to keep grubby fingers like mine off it); how then do I clean it?

My options are carb cleaner or brake cleaner or …. ??

Does anyone have other suggestions for how I might approach this short of spending £25 with Rufe changing the air inlet snout?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Jules

Have a read of these possible sources in the pics.

If you want to clean the MAF do it gently and carb. cleaner is ok but as you say keep your mit`s off!

clean and spray some WD40 on the connector

show`s you how fussy all these turbo`s are if it is the air snout

Thanks for the diagram/diagnostic.

The trouble only started after the intake snout was changed but I'll still work through the items listed here.

Regards,

Jules

Just my 2p's worth (not having a go) but I wouldn't use carb cleaner on the maf they are very sensitive and I've always been advised to only use electrical contact cleaner on the maf. Make sure you leave the maf somewhere warm to fully dry out before you refit, When I clean mine I normally leave it on the shelf above the radiator overnight before refiting

only in my defense, it is amazing how on the forum you just cannot win!

i have never ever cleaned my MAF on my motors as they are self cleaning as before you start an electric pulse goes through the wire to burn off deposits so it is a waste of time and also being a very delicate instrument can easily cost the owner £300 for another one

i said in my post "if you want to clean it" and as he has carb. cleaner that is OK , Servisol electric switch cleaner as i use on my electrical work is not God`s gift to all electrical wires it depends what type of dirt is on them and a MAF is likely to have more type of dirt you find in and around a carb. "petrol carbons" than what you find on a burnt switch or dusty /dirty switch also there is no need to dry it out as the incoming air will do that for you

i am not having a go either just explaining myself as i was badly criticised as always for the hell of it on here for saying Don`t clean them and this member said DO clean them!!!

So now i say IF you want to clean it, there is a difference

Nod, the spray pattern from carb cleaner is more a jet and the MAF is just a few really thin wires. I did one using carb & throttle body cleaner and just held it back a few inches so the spray was more of a mist by the time it got the MAF - then put it to one side and did some other stuff and had a fag break - about 30 minutes or so and then refitted it and it was fine Can leave it longer to be on the safe side.

i see we are on a "crusade" again,

it does depend if you shake the can doesn`t it?

i shake for 2 mins and hold it at 12" like paint and it is fine of course for all those that can`t read instructions, do it your own way

if you use Servisol as often as i do 2 tins per week, it comes out as fierce as all tins of spray if you don`t shake it!!

of course as said before you don`t have to clean it! it is cheaper that way!
