only place where you will get a constant 60mph realistically is on a motorway and trust me techies that work on cars with DPF's will not spend time driving a car when the same effect is reving the engine up to get the same result....not getting into an argument about it, its just fact

I have a manual 58 D5 V50 r design and the engine is the nuts, my normal commute is 30miles each way country roads and i do a good long journey a minimum of once a month and have no problems whatsoever (touch wood, shouldnt have said that). A very good car but i feel not as comfy as my V70 D5 which the wife has decided is hers now? I got for economy reasons and can easily get 50+mpg on a good run and 45-50 having fun on country roads overtaking etc. If you had to sit at 70 on the motorway i think you would get close to 55mpg. Mine has 120K and a Full dealer service history. No a drop of oil or water used between services no smoke and as tight as a drum. I had a 12K car from the dealer at the last service 1.6 drive e and and couldnt wait to give it back no torque revving hard and interestingly the computer only gave me 45mpg????? this results in you driving it hard up and down the gears etc while in the D5 it just takes life easy and will pull from 1200RPM easy. If you go for the D5 its probably the best diesel on the market for reliability and i dont think you will have any problems its a heavy lump that will easiliy do 300K with maintenance. Dont worry about the DPF as the engine is well suited and with the handling of the V50 you will enjoy just giving it a long run every now and again. Good luck im sure you will not regret the V50 if you go for it.

I only do 2 miles a day, but at least once a fortnight give it a decent length M-Way run (70-80mph on cruise) and my D5 with DPF hasn't given a blip of trouble yet, they are not half as bad as some make out.

I agree with Backhill and Dew. I've driven a 07 D5 v50 auto for 18 months. No DPF problems. You do need to make sure it's had the necessary software upgrades, but if it's a dealer car that shouldn't be an issue. Diesel with DPF isn't the right choice if all you ever do is the school run, but if you do a mix of short and longer journeys it should be OK.
D5 Geartronic performance is very good and fun to drive; cost of insurance is the only downside that I can see. |

If you look around for insurance you should be able to get a good deal. I was with Swiftcover when I bought my D5 R Design and was quoted over £700 at renewal a few weeks later. Had a look around and ended up going with LV who quoted £330. My wife who is also with LV and pays the same for her RAV4 T180 which is around the same insurance group.

I actually don't think the D5 is bad for insurance. I'm 21 with 3 points and it's only costing me £950 fully comp, which for a valuable, high powered car is pretty good going!
