Default Small dips in power. 1.6d

I have an 05 plate s40 1.6d and have recently noticed an intermittent drop in power when cruising in 4th or 5th gear. It has been happening for a while but has got more regular lately and when it happens it feels like it drops out for a second or two. The other day it happened under acceleration and returned to normal after lifting of the accelerator, returning to a cruise position.
When I say power drop, it feels like fuel stops for a second and returns to normal a second after. The car has no problems starting and idles normally.
Any ideas what the cause of this is likely to be?
