i only got my volvo a few weeks ago, but i have always thought of them as strong, almost tank like.

if u crash into sum1 then they will come off worse!

there fast, alot faster that what people think they are.

compfy, so very compfy. they must do alot of driving in sweden, coz the seats are the compfiest ive ever sat in.

my dad had a row of 7 volvos, all estates bar the last one, and they never him down, so far, mine hasnt. even with its oil leek!

mine is a 440 2.0 glt.

goes like a train and hopefully for a few years more!

but the word volvo says to me, is reliabality, praticalty, safety but at the same time fun, sporty and different from the normal...

Hi Paul

I bought my first Volvo in 1997 - a 960 Estate, almost new. After only five weeks, I had my first and (so far) only crash in over 30 years of driving. It was an absolute stonker, the car was written off, but I and my passengers walked away. That car saved our lives.

With the insurance money I went straight out and bought another - a saloon this time, again all but new. That has so far lasted 241000 miles. Best car I've ever owned. Like Tom (Microman) I own two other Volvos as well now.

To me, Volvos mean longevity - they take a very long time to wear out - safety, luxury and power; and their lack of vulnerability mean that they tend to atract less attention that competing marques. For some, that's a disadvantage, but not for me.

I hope that helps your project - show us some photos of your bathroom when you've finished it ...

Will

I started out driving with ex military landrovers. This was because I needed to carry welding equipment into fields etc. It required almost constant care to keep it on the road.
. The time came when life changed as it does and we needed a safe car for the kids and kit.
A Volvo 740 estate was purchased which we kept for 17 years. During that time other than regular home servicing and one or two little niggles it never let us down and covered over 280,000 miles. It needed some serious work to repair the car for the mot, so we changed to for another Volvo, this time an 850 estate.
We made the choice of another Volvo after witnessing an accident where a fuel tanker hit a Volvo 850 in the rear and crushed it into a wall. All four members of the family walked away with minor bruises.
The Fireman said that in any other car they might well have been killed outright.
This sold us on the 850 model and we bought one of the 20 valve models. We have been pleased with it not least because of the helpful Volvo dealer who is prepared to sort out parts for a nine year old car.
We have got on very well with it but personally I still liked the old 740 shape as the rear roof was higher.
However, the performance of the 850 is much better than the 740.
Whether it will be as easy to service remains to be seen.

Now Ford own Volvo I feel that commercial decisions will change the cars and the emphasis will change.

Ive always warmed to volvos as they are more than "just" a car. They become part of the furnature and are often kept by their owners for many years. Far more substantial than other cars, really built to last. They go on for as long as you want them to. The only way to kill them is though serious neglect, even then they go on for a long time.

Ill always be proud driving my 15 year old 940 estate, or any other volvo for that matter. Who knows, I may be proud driving my 25 year old 940 one day!

My interest in Volvo began in 1992. My parents bought a 360 GLS (reg FKM 911Y), and it was the first car we had owned where the dash lights actually worked. At the tender age of 9, it looked like the **** pit of an aircraft and i instantly fell in love.

The car in hindsight was was an old rust bucket, but the roar of that viscous fan, and the plush interior won me over.

When i began driving i started with an 1989 Honda civic auto, then progressed to a 2003 diesel civic. However my best mate shortly after this purchase bought an 850 GLT. Instantly i was jealous and the fond memories of my youth came flooding back.

I got rid of the 2003 civic because it was just too unrealistic financially. I was therefore looking for a budget car for less that £500 to tie me over until something better came along.
Thats when my mate in the 850 found me the 760 Turbo that i drive now.

I love the car so much. I know i must sound like a sad old car bore with a tank-top, but its just immense. Im 23 this year and i love all the usual things like clubbing and getting wrecked every weekend, but i don't wanna be trevving up and down in a car that everyone else has got. I wanna be different - and my volvo is different.

The 760 appeals to me in several ways.
Firstly, no one i know, or in my village has got a 760. Not only that but ive only seen 2 760 Turbo's since i bought the car 16 months ago.
I also like the fact that nobody else on the road likes it and me for being a volvo driver. That pleases me immensly, and i quite often do the usual volvo driver woes just to **** them off, like sticking to 20mph in a 20 limit at 3am when they're on my bumper! - its just too funny.

Normally i drive sensibly abiding by the law and keeping to speedlimits simply because its safer (safety is my biggest priority) and secondly because it uses too much jungle juice when you gun it.

Another attribute has to be the durability of the older volvo's. Dont see many in scrap yards, and the owners always seem to keep them for years!!! - "ye old faithful!!!"

Its also the only car ive ever been in where you get out after a long haul trip feeling just as fresh as you did when you started. Effotless!!

It also appeals to me because i like my toys, and what else can you buy for £400 which has a list of toys longer than an elephants trunk?
£400 gets you a knackered N reg mondeo - well quite frankly you would have to pay me to own one!!!

Another sad statement which i have to share is the fact that i love the styling. The bodywork is in MINT condition. The car is 17 yo and is completely rust free. It has been garaged for all of its life except for now.
It has alot of chrome and looks the bizz when you have just spent the good part of you saturday morning valetting it.

I often stand outside having a ciggy just so that i can go and look at it. (im gonna pop out for one after ive written this!LOL)

Volvo has maintained its brand values over the last 80 years and it is these values that have made the product so great.

I want to own a car which is completely reliable, that will protect me, my family and my friends should we be unfortunate enough to be involved in an RTA. I also want to own a car which is of the best quality. Its because of these factors that i own and love Volvo. I would rather pay more money on qaulity parts etc, than be a skin flint and always be worried about breaking down!

Make no mistake, This car is URGENT!!!, i can easily in plush comfort keep up with my mate's merc cosworth.

It offers me almost everything that i want in a car, and the brand values are values which i would have adopted had i have been the founder of Volvocars all those years ago.

There are so many things which make Volvo better than the average car.
Most of all though, it is the feeling that you get when you're driving. Its the feeling of being cosseted and protected, like a hug from your mother. Its the feeling that you have nothing to prove, and that parked next to a car of equal age, your Volvo always looks in better nik.

Its also for me about the grin i get when i nail the throttle to the luxurious carpet. The kick you get in the seat is enough to rupture your splean, and all from a car the size of the QE2!!

I would also like to briefly add in my conclusion, that the policy seem to ignore volvo's on the road. I have on the odd occassion been going just above the legal limit and the policy have turned a blind eye - something that the criminals also seem to to do. It allows me to keep a low profile. I would imagine it would make a great car for smuggling drugs and such like (not that im suggesting you do this). Big boot so lots of space for storing it, and the police ignore you - maybe im on to something here?? ;-) - only joshing!!

The only thing which annoys me is the fuel consumption. Its too thirsty with Gordon Browns fuel prices. It is the only thing that grinds my ****, because it feels so wastefull, and i hate waste.

Other than that i have no bug-bare.

........Except the ownership of Volvo by Ford cars!!
Ford couldn't organise a ****-up in a brewery, and as a result it is starting to rub off on the new Volvo's. Reliability doesn't seem to be as good, prices have shot up at the dealer's for parts since the take over and some of the parts people are shocking!!
Hence the reason why i take my old girl to a specialist who deals with the hassle of getting parts and stuff from them for me!!

Hope this helps your project - i could waffle on for days!!

Best wishes,

Jono
