Default v70 t5 2001 auto

Hi all, long time no speak.
Having run 240's nearly all my driving life til the purchase of a v70xc, and learnt my lesson the expensive way. I then gave up on Volvo and moved to Mercedes. I now am in a position to start asking questions again, due to friend's misfortune.
I've looked at the car and can only turn to you, who will always be much more knowledgeable than myself.
So, friends of mine have a v70 t5 and the aisin 50 (/51 I think) box has started playing up. The oil is burnt. It's hanging in 2nd / 3rd and I've suggest the b4 valve cover should be looked at. They've been to two autobox specialists, both of whom have said new box, one of whom said drive it til it dies and let the aa bring it in cos it will cost no more. Quoted prices are around £2200 / £2400 to replace.
For a y plate car it's very tidy and pretty much everything else expected on a 125k mile car has been replaced.
Here's the question; Is it worth replacing the box and keeping it or sell it as a non runner? They've said they'd like to keep it for a few years and I've mentioned the 'so you've fixed everything else that might go wrong, so do this and keep it' thing but they've asked for your input.
So opinions please...

Personally Triv I'd do a complete flush out & replace with JWS 3309 Gear oil ...

Somewhere wayy back in the past I did a thread on Gearboxes ...

In a Nutshell...........

Son buys a Laguna 2 3.0 litre (52 plate) fer 450 quid .... gearbox is SHOT AT (Exactly the same as you describe) ... Lag 2 has the SAME 'Box AW55/50SN as the V70 (but Renault call it a SU1 / 002)..

It had been repaired by "Others" but however refilled the box FORGOT the Torque Converter hence the Problem ... 3.5 litres of JWS 3309 later its REET AS NINEPENCE!!! Box has 3.5 Litres + 3.5 Litres fer the torque converter ..

to do a PROPER flush you'll need approx 14 litres of Oil .. (& It aint Cheap!!!) ..

But that would be MY first port of call

Keith

If you or they can DIY, the cost of trying the B4 cover and fully flushing the fluid should not be too high, say £100 and worth a try given the cost of a 'new' box.

Use the Vauxhall fluid a search will find the part No. on this forum.

You may need to do two flushes.

The box holds 7.5 litres the method of flushing is also on this forum.

People will tell you it will need 14 litres to get the fluid clean, I'd say flush through until the new fluid starts to come out, this should be around 7-8 litres and then stop, top up to the correct level. Run the car for a while (2-300 miles) and check the fluid condition again.

Consider a second flush if the fluid is still too dirty.

Thank you for the replys. Were it mine, that is what I'd do. They are definitely not DIY types but do listen to sound advice. I'll point them in a decent indie's direction. Thanks again all.
