Is there some clever bit of kit on the vehicle that ensures there is adequate charge in the battery?
It's useful all the time to keep the system dry and avoid smelly aircon due to bacteria growth.

My thought on it is there must be a sensor in the system that detects moisture in the system and switches it on as required ! ! !

Yes I think there must be Stew as I have only seen it happen since we have had some (semi) warm days and hence presumably a bit of condensed moisture inside the aircon system.

Mine used to do this with no problem, especially when it was hot (I work and drive my CX90 in Bahrain), but now the fan won't turn off at all and just flattens the battery. I have been quoted £850 by the local Volvo dealer for a replacement 'power unit' and 'control', which sounds pretty outrageous to me. Does anyone know exactly what these parts are, and whether there is a simple fix for this problem?

Can you shut off the fan by manually shutting off the a/c and heater before shutting off the engine?

The cars computer has overiding control of the fan but you can set it not to have a run on using VIDA. Could end up with smelly aircon though because the run on is designed to keep the system dry and avoid contamination.
