Default fuel filter change

Trying to change fuel filter. I have loosened the drain plug and have quite a lot of diesel coming out, I know there should be some in the filter but how much.it seems like a lot more than the filter would hold. Also been checking other threads and came across a couple regarding putting wrong fuel in and advice is to drain all of the tank through the drain plug on the filter. What is correct. Thanks

why are you draining the filter you do not have to to do a filter change. if you have drained all the fuel out you have to replace that housing with diesel, that will take a lot of time and effort from the fuel pump.

Surely if I take the filter housing off (its the plastic type) the diesel will still come out, I think I have had around 1.5lts so far, I have stopped now. I would hope that the tank will not drain.

You wont drain the tank as it needs pressure from the in tank electrical pump to do that , just let it keep coming , shouldnt be more than a couple of litres if that

Not recommended to change filter with over 1/2 tank fuel.

It doesnt matter how much fuel is in the tank , when you take the filter off , you get the half litre or so gush of fuel so use a bowl to collect it , fuel doesnt issue from the filter housing once it is empied ...

what a job to get the housing off. A neighbour helped me in the end, a motor expert. I found out that as post two toldme you dont have to remove the drain plug. This is because it acts like a syphon an will not stop until most of the fuel has been drained. Finally got the housing of with a huge pair of grips, a strap wrench would not even budge it. The filter was completely black, and when we cleaned the inside of the housing that was full off black grime. Replaced it and after taking a while to start all seems well now. I will check in the morning once it has gone below freezing again, as thats when the problem starts. Either way the filter needed changing, does not look like it has ever been changed at least in the last four years, probably because they could not get the housing off. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.
Thanks all
