Default Front suspension top mount clearance

After a successful spring seat transplant and very annoying cv boot replacement over the weekend, I have noticed that the special washer that sits on the top of the front strut is perhaps 1/4" clear of the top mount bearing. Is there meant to be a gap here as I'm sure i measured everything correctly when I compressed the springs?

ASIDE: Many thanks once again to the members on this forum - the info I read on here made both the above jobs far easier to attempt. I can back people up now when they say "remove the entire drive-shaft before trying to split the cv joint". Took a fairly large hammer and a lot of patience to free that little bugger even in a vice! And lets not get started on the ball joint pinch bolt...

Mines always had the gap as you described, with and without new suspension.
