Default Urgent Engine Service Required

Hi all,

When returning home this evening, with fuel running low, I got an Urgent Engine Service Required message when the fuel warning light came on. The trip computer showed 75 miles left in the tank (though I doubt this is very accurate) with the car going briefly into limp home mode.

Upon filling up (£90 to full tank, 62.something litres) the warning message reset and went out.

I do not normally let the tank get much lower than 1/4 full.

Is this normal behaviour for a 04 D5 geartronic?

Many Thanks,

Mike

I filled up yesterday and put in 64.5 ltr. The trip computer showed 50 miles to empty so I'd say yours was pretty accurate.

I'd drain your fuel filter. You may have some water contamination.

In a word,Yep.

This happened too me on the motorway when i had the tin tent swinging off the back. The fuel gauge was showing just under a quarter full and it just cut out.I var near filled my keck's,if i'd have been overtaking at the time i think i would have done, lol.

Problem;fuel filter full of crap.

Solution;new filter fitted and problem sorted.

Jason

+1 to what Jason just said. Running your fuel low picked up crud from the bottom of the tank. Time for a new filter or this message/limp home mode will reoccur later

I was 99% certain it would have something to do with pulling crud through the fuel lines but what threw me was engine half coming out of limp mode quite quickly whilst the warning message stayed on, and the message reseting itself as soon as I'd filled up and restarted the car. I didn't think that the crud would've cleared just by turning off, re-fuelling and turning on again.

Since this happening the mpg readings, both average and instantaneous have increased, leaving me more doubtful of their accuracy.

The crud has already passed through. No doubt some will be still sitting in the fuel filter. Change it. It's a cheap insurance.
The misfire is caused by the engine management detecting the fault. It won't happen again until the next dirt passes through.
i used to have this problem with my car which progressively got worse and worse as time passed. It used to happen more during hard acceleration when the engine was starved by a clogged filter. it hasn't happened since changing the fuel filter. These D5's need the fuel filter changed or they complain
