Default Brake squeal

Brake squeal. What could be the likely cause?

No anti squeal shims on the back of the brake pads some pads have a thin rubber pad stuck on the back, some don't so use copper grease. Remove pads and smear a small amount of copper grease on the pad back, NOT the friction part.

I have read that non-Volvo pads were more likely to squeal. I replaced my 240 disks a couple of years ago and for some reason, put non Volvo pads in the back and they have squealed ever since. A couple of weeks ago, I was in my local Volvo dealer and was given (yes given!) a set of rear pads and a few other service items. Changed the rear pads at the weekend, smeared the backs with copper grease and no more squealing ! Whether its the pads or the grease, its SO much nicer

It might that gen parts are a better fit or they come already with a thin rubber shim already on the back of the pad, but you can buy the anti squeal shims or just use a bit of copper grease. A more race orientated pad has the potential to squeal more.
