Default Oil filter location

Hi, I am new to this so please excuse any ignorance shown. I have a XC90 2003 2.4 D5, can somebody please tell me where the oil filter is located?
Thanks in advance.

Its the black cover with the 36mm socket on top of it just north west right next to the red grip of the oildipstick

Nice dipstick! Why did volvo get rid of them on the latest 5 cylinder diesels?

Because most a-technical idiots wont use the dipstick anyway
So volvo replaced that with "perfect " electronics ;-)

Makes getting the oil level right after an oil change a little bit time consuming.

Just done one on my D5 and put 5L back in knowing that the manual says 5.9L, but not knowing exactly how much came out. That took it to the midpoint, so I put about 200ml more in the next day. Stayed at the midpoint, so i put 200 ml more in again the next day and now it's right on the MAX mark, but I'd like to run it at the 3/4 mark just as a safeguard against any HP fuel pump or DPF issues.

Measure what you drain out
Then you can put back that amount without doubt if its good or not

Doesn't matter what came out. Just put in no more that 5.9l and you'll be fine.

different variants of the 5 cyl diesel from 2006 have different revised capacities ranging from 5.5 to 5.9 litres , add 5.5 and after standing for 15 mins use the grey dipstick on the front edge of the sump . try to get it below the upper edge of the top mark .

Thanks Clan, I did wonder if that was a "mechanic's" dipstick. I've only had the V70 for 4 months and 4,000 miles so I'm still learning about. Come to think of it I'm still learning about my '99 V40 T4 that I've also had from new!
