Another leak!
I'm a Volvo newbie and have had great fun getting my '89 740 into shape over the past month. Now the body is sorted and she is running fine I had a clean up inside today and found the drivers footwell soaked! I see an anwswer on a previous qusetion mentioning coolant in a 740 as a possible cause, please explain as yes, I only filled the car up yesterday, the coolant bottle was way below minimum.
I also gave it a good wash yesterday so I will check all drainage alleys too. Hopefully I can get it sorted as It is now MOT'd, insured and ready to be taxed on the 1st AND I am stll below £300 all in:-) Thank you, Mark |

RE: Another leak!
That sounds to me like the heater which isn't something i've personally tackled :( Check the FAQ here:
http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/Heat...terCoreLeaking My guess would be the water control valve (section after the above). Which, from what I remember is easy enough to get to from the drivers footwell. I'm sure someone here will be able to tell you better than me though :) Good Luck! |

RE: Another leak!
Nooooooo! Far too complicated! Seriously, thanks for your help but I think perhaps it's not the water valve, according to the info it is mounted on the left hand side which suggests the water should be resting on that side footwell. My car is right hand drive and the left side footwell is completely dry.
Next! Thanks You, Mark |

RE: Another leak!
You have been reading a manual for left-hand drive cars I suspect. The water valve is up in front of where the left foot goes when operating the clutch, unless yours is auto in which case for clutch read left-foot rest. All the best, Peter |

Sorry I should have mentioned in my original post that the FAQ was American.
Apologies, Graeme |

RE: Another leak!
Not only are US cars LHD and this one RHD but all 700/900 series cars in the US came with air co which I doubt you have. Honestly, a heater control valve which you can bet your grandmother is the problem here is dead easy to replace, even more so on RHD cars.
Firstly, taste the water to determine whether it is coolant, if it tastes sweat, then you have a coolant leak. It could be the heater matrix which, although expensive, is also a doodle on a non-air co car. RE: Another leak!
Thanks again for the replies. George you are right on both counts, I don't have AC and the access will be a lot easier on the RHD, thankfully. I will have a look/taste at the liquid tomorrow and take it from there but I don't appear to be losing coolant and the temp is stable,so we shall see.
Thanks, Mark. |
