Default Speakers For 940

I'm thinking about fitting better quality speakers to my car and wondered whats considered good now.
I bought some adaptor plates off ebay to fit 5 1/4" speakers in the standard holes but wondered if anyone has sucsessfully cut down any 6" ones to fit under the standard grills.

I've been looking round at speakers. Maplin do some cheap ones which don't sound bad spec wise. In fact I have a pair of 6x9" one in the loft I had fitted in something else and they didn't sound too bad.
I was thinking of Alpine, Kenwood or similar of a decent spec but are they as good as they used to be.

Anything more expensive is going to be a bit ott as I don't really want to start fitting amps etc.
The car is fitted with a oldish Alpine CD player which isn't a bad spec so the speakers have to work a bit harder than they did with the standard Volvo radio.

I fitted some Sony speakers to the front doors of my 740, in the hope of improving on the Volvo originals. Unfortunately, the new ones sound exactly the same as the old: hard and screechy. I wonder whether the problem is that the back of the speaker backs into the door cavity (with only a thin plastic splash shield behind it), and that it's the acoustics of the cavity that govern the sound...

All ive done is sit a massive sub in the back with 6x9's either side and send the majority of the power to the better quality speakers (rear; aka the 6x9's)

I must admit that when i changed to my new headunit a while before i put anything else in the car the speakers perked up quite alot!

I've got some excellent secondhand Blaupunkt six inch ones in the 760 doors which I used to have in the 940 doors, I can't remember what my (very cheap) autoelectrican (sadly now retired) did re fitting them, I think the standard grills have had to be left off and are in my garage

These are brand new, v similar

Thanks for the replys.
To be fair to the original speakers I've had the stereo in the car since I bought it and they have been ok. I was just looking to see if any improvements could be made.
My spares car has the later type inner door covers and I plan to fit these. They are apparently better then the plastic sheel and the doors make a different noise when you close them.
I also messed about with the speakers on the dash. Early cars had proper little speakers, later cars had tweeters. Not sure when this changed but think it was early on in 940 production. I ended up leaving the tweeters fitted.

If I can get a 6" speaker from somewhere I will try cutting the sides to see if it can be fitted. If you have to cut too near the flexable bits of the speaker or it makes them too weak it won't work.

That explains my lovely sounding dash speakers in the 760 and the horrible tinney sounding speakers in my previous 940 dash and in my current one! I have to say my Blaupunkts in my doors are far superior to the Volvo door speakers
