Default Why "Ovlov"?

Hi Guys

Why is "Ovlov" used as a nick name for Volvo?

Is it simply because it is Volvo spelt backwards, or is there anything else to it?

Simply spelt backwards, like Subaru becomes "U R A Bus"

Back in the early 80's my grandad had a Volvo wagon (Either an F7 or the one before) when they had the individual big letters across the bonnet so he swapped them round to read OVLOV, used to get some right looks.

one of the bike magazines ( bike funnily enough) in the 80s/90s used to have a cartoon strip where the character (Ogri) met aliens who had big lumbering bikes made by WMB (BMW) they were from the planet ovlov. stems from the beleif that Volvo drivers drive into bikers lots.

IME doesn't matter what car is driven, a crap driver is a crap driver

I used to see a few Volvo's where the driver had moved the lettering around..... Heh, I'd forgotten about that

Yep, agree with subaqua, the first time I heard the term "OVLOV" was in Bike magazines OGRI cartoon strip. As well as being a V50 owner, I also have a Yamaha 1200 VMax that comes out on warm sunny summer days (not used much this year then!!). You can imagine the banter I got from fellow bikers when they found out I had bought a Volvo.....and I also agree, its who's behind the steering wheel that counts not the make of car !

The idea was that when a Volvo driver hit a biker, he would leave an imprint of the letters OVLOV somewhere on the biker.

This has been knocking around biker lore for a long time and was simply picked up by the mags and used for comedy effect.
