Taffy, until last week my 1994 854 2.0 20v would die after a cold start-up unless I gave it some gentle revs, then, when it was fully warmed up, it revved it's nuts off at anywhere between 1400 to 1600rpm!
On a warm start-up, it would idle at 900rpm until it was driven, after which it would revert to idling at 1400-1600rpm. My car was a manual but the symptoms sound similar. Mmine was cured with a replacement Idle Air Control Valve (the old one's butterfly valve had seized). My car now starts from cold without any throttle, and when warm, it never idles above 900rpm. I'M NOT A MECHANIC, but I would hazard a guess that your new Idle Air Control Valve will cure your car too. It seems to be an achilles heel of these cars, albeit a relatively minor one in the grand scheme of things...
