Default Insurance.

I am needing to Insure my volvo based on the VIN number as I am returning to the UK and need VIN based insurance for the re-registration process for DVLA.

I have phoned DVLA UK and they say I can drive it to the UK and then immediately take out VIN based insurance to start the re-registration process.

I have tried phoning Adrian Flux and Footman James but the years premium and VIN based insurance for 6 weeks is over £1000.

This is based unfortunately on a B14 postcode. Birmingham. I am going to be buying a boat to live on and then plan to live in a rural area hopefully then I can get classic car insurance and much lower cost based on a new postcode.

I could take it out monthly and then cancel and then go with someone else, but would have to pay cancellation costs.

Ideally I would like to just pay a lump sum without having to do direct debits just for the cover for up to a month while I register it.

Can anyone recommend anywhere else that does insurance based on the chassis/VIN number?

Thanks James

Try these guys, they also do short term cover, so may be useful to you:

Hi thanks

I have telephoned acorn insurance and they can insure me for 30 days based on VIN insurance for £200. At least this will suit as it's only for a month and then hopefully get classic car insurance then.

I will contact the company you mentioned and see if they can beat it.

Edit no good as the company only insure UK registered vehicles after clicking get a quote.

How about Direct Line - from their website:
'Can I receive an online quote if I do not have a registration number yet?
Yes, you are able to obtain a quotation without the registration number. Please fill the relevant fields surrounding this question. Once these are filled in please click on the get premium button, which will then prompt you to choose the car details.

Can you not keep the current insurance from abroad running until you have the UK registration with the DVLA sorted? Then you just cancel the old insurance and the DVLA will contact the relevant registration office to let them know the car is now UK reistered.
I did that with a motorbike I brought across.

No, unfortunately not, DVLA insist on VIN based insurance to register the vehicle
