Head gasket and heater valve help
The head gasket has blown on my 740 (B200E). Unfortunately I had to limp home so it got worse, one cylinder full of water and leaking out of the side of the gasket. Oil emulsified with the water. Could this have done any further damage? Should just an oil and filter change be sufficient to clean out the oil system?
Any tips on replacing the gasket, I'm about to start today. I've been looking through and see it is suggested to split the exhaust at the downpipe rather than remove the manifold - worth trying? The heater valve has been slightly leaking for ages (damp carpet drivers side). This would be a good time to replace it. Again any tips on this. There appears differing opinions on how difficult it is! Any suggestions on where to buy replacements from? Thanks Steve |

RE: Head gasket and heater valve help
The oil side should be ok with a change, there will be a little water left in but a good run will fix that.
The head gasket going will need to be investigated as to why it went. You will have to look carefully for any cracks or even better get it crack tested to be sure if you drove it far. The head will at least probably need skimming and the engineering firm that skim it would also be able to crack test it. As to the heater valve I would think you would get one easily enough from one of the firms who advertise in the VOC magazine. It may be easier to split the exhaust at the downpipe but the engineering work would be a lot easier with the manifold off. If all goes well I would put a new cam belt on while it's down. |
