Default 2.0 LPT Diesel purr revving up

Hey
My LPT engine started to develop this ugly Diesel purr as the revs go up in idle.
This is coming straight from the engine, straight under the top cover, where it says VOLVO. (Not the Injector cover, that's clean)

I was wondering 2 things.

1. Is this engine on borrowed time ? How much time do I have to organize a purchase of another S40 ? I was told that it means bad bearings or something. Never opened an engine and don't know whats going on there that could cause a diesel purr to go along with the normal "Vac" sound.

2. If not, what else could cause this ?

Power/boost is not affected. Very fast and nice... Fuel is up a bit... Went up by 1.5L/100KM last 3 refuels. Otherwise no other symptoms.

Prices are down locally for this car... Hopefully if this dies I can finally get a really good one with better luck
I do love it.. Can't drive anything else.

Hehe sorry its a 2.0 petrol turbo with a diesel purr purr in addition to the petrol Vaccume cleaner sound.

The purr comes before the vac sound.. Most disctint on sligjt taps on the accelerator between 2k and 3k.

Yea got VVT ! But no codes on the ECU ....

I haven`t had a guess at your noise but don`t be fooled by the VVT as there not necessarily shown error codes!

My 2001 1.8 has been burring it`s pants off for 2yrs now and still no codes

Bought it on 72,000 it`s now on 91,000 = 19,000 noisy miles.

Hah, Great !!

Well, does it matter if I "take it easy" or not on the rest of this engine's active life ? Can I accelerate with all my horses if I want to ?
