Default V40 Engine Management Light.

Hi All. My engine management light has come on.

Is there anyway to reset it to see if it comes on again?

Im very mechanically competent but the engine is running fine and cant fault performance/idle/response etc so im stumped for where to start looking.

Im thinking of buying a code reader off fleabay to point me in the right direction....can any one recommend one that they have bought and used?

My car is a V40, 1.6 petrol, on a 52plate- whats the name of the engine managment type/system is fitted to this car? (I assume there will be different code readers for different years of build)

Any fellow mechanics that have found this to be a common fault and have a most likely cause?

Cheers, Rob

I use an ELM327 bluetooth adaptor and the Torque Pro android app, reads and clears the codes on my 52 plate S40

The adaptors can be picked up for around a tenner on Ebay

Do you know anyone with and Android phone? I can send you the Torque pro app to install

You could get a Volvo DICE unit, they're a bit pricey, but top quality

that app looks good, but no phone available. the DICE unit is way over my budget unfortunately.

my mate has a code scanner for his nissan- am i right in thinking that it will work on any 16 pin data link connector?

I used to work on fords about 10 years ago and im familiar with fords FDS/WDS 16 pin DLC but since getting out of the trade ive lost touch with whats new-

does my volvo have any of these? CAN-BUS OBD2 OBDII EOBD EOBDII, if so there is a scanner for 15 quid on ebay.

oh and where is the 16 pin connector located on the car?

cheers again, Rob

You will find the connector if you look at the center consol roughly where your left knee hits it when in the drivers seat, it is tucked up but easy to access.
Try your mates OBD-II reader on the car no harm in trying, write down th ecodes it has stored then reset the ECU using the reader, take the car for a short drive then scan it again - Mike

*UPDATE*
My mates code reader came up with 'P0030 Ho2s Heater fault'

Reset the DTC's, turned the MIL light off.

Light has come back on after test drive.

Had a quick look to check wiring/multiplug on Lambda sensor- COULD NOT FIND IT!

Next questions are: where is the sensor located?
do i need to get right underneath the car?
are they two sensors on my model? (2002 1.6 V40)

I read in another thread they are 2 (pre cat and post cat) but not sure what model car that was on.

Cheers.

p.s. NOT happy about the price of new ones! and im guessing the 20 quid ones probably wont last. Fix the car or feed the kids??? lol
