Hi - it is not uncommon to read posts such as your's on here. Usually the buyer appears to have an overly-optomistic view of the prognosis once it is purchased, but not always. "Eyes wide-shut" indeed. There was one chap on here recently however who was dispairing about his purchase, but indeed had purchased a relatively solid car for about 1.5k!
Many of us have been through a big resto, and provided you have the time and $$ it can be very satisfying. Likely any Amazon for less than 3,000 quid will have some rust issues and would benefit with a re-spray in its near future anyway. If you have the rust as already described, then I'd be very careful. As a rule it is best to pay more up-front for a solid car, but if this is what you want colour-wise etc.... that counts for something too. I'm rooting for you. Do you know all of the classic trouble-spots? If you have the space, a parts-car is always a good idea.

pretty familar with old cars, owned two early seventies vw campers, two '72 bugs, a 77 bug, 72 volvo 164, 66 amazon estate, 66 vauxhall viscount and three saab v4's in my time....i wouldnt touch the amazon im looking at other than the structural issues..it will be used daily and retain its patina of age/general aura of scruffiness....i USE my cars. like i said, i am a realist. if i get it home and it is not for economic repair, i will happily pass it on as a sparers car.
