In order to utilise the start-stop on the automatic the foot brake needs to be kept pressed down. Obviously, as the engine isn't turning it is irrelevant whether the gearbox is in Drive or Neutral but it does mean that the person behind has to put up with your brake lights.

I said ages ago that for manuals it should be stop/start engaged when Neutral is selected and the engine restarts when the clutch is pressed, for Autos they should engage stop/start wehn the EPB is applied, on pressing the accelerator to move off, the engine restarts and the EPB disengages once it has.

A member posted this on another thread which suggests that a modern auto box goes into neutral when stopped with the foot on the brake pedal. So leave in D for newer cars then? Although perhaps in older cars this would not happen and it would stay in D causing wear - so perhaps shift to N in older cars?

Stop Neutral Function is only applicable to auto boxes. When the car is stationary it moves the gearbox into neutral automatically. As soon as you take your foot off the break pedal it engages gear ready to go.

Goes to show that 'old rules' may not apply to todays modern machinery.

Regards
