FOR SALE / Peterborough / 01733 425140 / 07976 935046 / sales@kgfclassiccars.co.uk / £6895
A multi award winning Volvo 164E with full Volvo History and just three owners from new.

EQUIPMENT
Halogen headlights, anti-intrusion reinforced doors, manual sunroof, hazard warning lights, Volvo mud-flaps, chrome wing mirrors, electrically operated overdrive, rheostat-controlled instrument lighting, seat belt warning light, rev-counter, clock, heated rear window, safety steering wheel, internal switch for electric aerial, illuminated glove-box, rear armrest, driver/passenger lumbar support, rear child locks, Volvo rubber floor mats, locking fuel cap.

EXTERIOR
With no fewer than 25 trophies, plaques and certificates for ‘best in show’ the finish of this Gold Metallic, (Code 105) Volvo 164E is stunning. Hours of polishing, detailing and protecting has preserved this truly magnificent example. Factory correct in every respect the exterior trim, badging and chrome is perfect. Age related paint pimples can be seen on the bonnet and the N/S/R door shoulder. The original Volvo dealer supplied pressed aluminium plates are still fitted along with Holden Motors rear window sticker. Invoices from Holden Motors amounting to thousands of pounds reveal the quest for perfection the owner had for the exterior appearance of this car. Probably the best 164E in the country.

INTERIOR
The interior of this Volvo 164E is outstanding in every respect. Specified in matching and genuine Gold Metallic Leather, (Code 954-804), this executive environment is truly wonderful. All the leather door cards, trim, roof lining and carpeting are as new. The seats have some age related creases. Genuine Volvo rubber floor mats have been fitted all-round. All the switch gear, gauges and electrical items function with precision. The sun visors have minor markings and there is some debris behind the instrument cluster barely visible. The boot area is pristine and still has the original spare tyre, tools and protective lining. A true Swedish Rolls Royce.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The B30E power plant ("E" standing for einspritzung, German for "fuel injection") produces 175bhp and propels this large vehicle along at a rapid pace. Meticulously maintained by Volvo this example has wanted for nothing. The very last, new, genuine exchange Volvo engine was fitted in April 1987, (invoice in the file), and the vehicle has only covered 22,000 miles since! The transmission operates with engineered precision although the clutch feels a little heavy. The electrically operated overdrive works.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Original and pristine 15” steel wheels with mirror finish Volvo hubcaps and embellishers adorn all four wheels. Correct Michelin XAS 165 HR15 tyres are fitted with little wear. Disc brakes all round on a dual-circuit brake system ensure positive stopping power for such a heavy vehicle.

HISTORY FILE
Supplied new in September 1973 by Holden Motors, the Volvo Dealer in Norwich, to its first owner for seven years, before being purchased by Mr John Bailey in November 1980 through the same main dealer. The original Purchase Invoice reveals Mr Bailey part exchanged a Volvo 145 DL to upgrade to this vehicle where it remained in his fastidious care for 31 years. He even kept the newspaper advert where his first saw the car! Returning annually to Holden Motors with all invoices to prove this vehicle has been lovingly pampered by him. Displayed around the country winning numerous awards for best in show, this really was his pride and joy. Selected by Volvo UK in 1994 for a National advertising campaign with press cuttings, photos and framed photographs as a reminder all neatly boxed. All trophies, plaques and certificates remain with the vehicle.

Only sold by Mr Bailey due to his advancing years in April 2011 to an enthusiast now wishing to downsize their collection.

One key fits all locks and ignition, and there are 3 sets of keys present. Every conceivable manual, document, brochure is included. Period road tests when new also provided.

MOT Jan 2014 and HPI Clear.

Lovely car. To my mind the paint issues strongly suggest its had paint. The fact the spare wheel covers aren't black provide further evidence.
Happy to be proved wrong though.

I seem to remember that someone who posts in the 240 section of the forum attempted to buy this car at Anglia auctions in 2011, but the bidding went far beyond his budget. I copied and pasted Anglia's auction result below. Not much profit in this for KGF Classics given the auction purchase price!

1973 VOLVO 164E
.
Manual, o/d. 3 owners. 126k miles with comprehensive service history. Pevious Volvo owners club concours winner. The Norwich based vendor, who has owned the car for over 31 years, is only selling due to his advancing years and describes the car as being in excellent condition. This car was used by Volvo in a national advertising campaign during the early 1990's.

Purchased by the vendor from Holden Motors, Volvo main dealers in Norwich, at 72,123 miles on the 17th November 1980. On the 15th May 1981 a genuine new Volvo gearbox was fitted. On the 29th May 1987 when the car had covered 104,107 miles, one of the very last Volvo factory exchanges engines was installed. MOT September 2011

ESTIMATE: £1800-£2600
RESULT: SOLD £5775

Looks absolutely beautiful, and it would be great to think that it'll find a good home. That's a lot of money though.

Interesting description of 'age-related paint pimples', and the thousands of pounds in invoices from Holdens for work done to maintain the external appearance suggest that paintwork has been done over the years.

But then again, the car is 40-odd years old, and unless it's been kept in a bubble for most of that time will inevitably have needed some paint. Given that 126,000 miles have been covered then clearly the car has been used, which in itself is surely a good thing!

Is it worth so much money? Well, it's arguably beyond the scope of the published guides in Practical Classics etc, and well into the realms of 'it's worth whatever a buyer will pay'. So few of these come up, especially in this condition that it's just too hard to value.

I for one wish I had the cash to spare. If I did I'd want that car to start my own personal collection of old Volvos. But unless I win the lottery then that ain't going to happen just yet!

If it was under £3000 then I could be tempted......!

So good luck to the seller, and let's hope that a fine-looking 164 does end up with a true enthusiast.
