Default 1997 V70 AWD help with oil leak from rear

Hi everyone,

I have recently purchased a V70 AWD in the knowledge that the rear differential was disengaged and it was running fwd only. Thing is it has started leaking oil from the reader passenger side, looks like its CV coming from the axle area. It stinks!

My question is, can you remove the rear differential? So that the wheels free wheel and I don't have to worry about anymore leaks!

Thanks in advance

It might not be the diff have a look at the passenger side nivomat as the oil stinks in them once they start leaking also after a night is the car lower on one side then the other.

Agree with the above, identify the source of the leak first before doing anything unnecessary - it may very well be just a shock absorber.

The nivomats are a high pressure oil filled shock that with the more weight in the boot they level the car out

To remove them you need a very high ramp to jack the car up as high as possible 3'- 4' to give the clearance

You undo the two bolts at the bottom and the one at the top on the boot then under the car the two bolts that you have removed tap that bracket up be care full it has the handbrake cable connected to it with a 10mm bolt

Then the nivomat will come straight out expect a lot of dirt hitting you in the face when you do it
