Code readers and software

I got my V50 about 3 weeks ago and I'm enjoying every minute of owning and driving it so far.

A friend lent me his code reader ( Amazon link ) just to check if there are any underlying fault codes on my car and unfortunately it did pick one up but it just reads as 001/001 which, from what I can gather is its a fault that cant be read fully by this reader.

I have now lent my brothers ELM327 reader ( eBay link ) but I haven't got any software for it, is there any software specifically for Volvos that will work with this reader? (Hopefully free or cheap

)I've read VIDA/DICE a couple of times since joining the forum but I'm not sure if this is software or actually a reader?

Any help will be appreciated, Cheers.

Get yourself a DICE with VIDA and you will be able to do all diagnostics of all modules , the only thing you won´t be able to do is to reprogram modules as the firmware is not available outside of vida subscriptions.
ELM327 and others generic readers will read OBDII codes only and not ABS/AIRBAG and so on...
