S70 Stalling
Hello everyone!
First off my english is a bit dodgy, but please try to bear with me. I have volvo s70 1999. 2.4 liter engine, manual, no turbo, fwd and 300000 km (186411 miles) driven. Problem i have is that sometimes when i'm stopping say to a red light engine might shut off. Working engine should drop rpm nicely around 900rpm right? Well my volvo has significant overshoot. So much so it occasionally shuts the engine off. Engine always starts with ease after this. Tried to read trouble codes. Nope. None. Nada. You get the picture. Idle seems smooth though. So to recap, clutch in, breaking, rpm does not settle to idle speed but rather overshoots, engine stalls. I'm not expert in this sorta thing but i'm thinking etm or maf (likely etm) is starting to fail. Thoughts? |

check for leaks in the intake side of things, clean the ETM check your spark plugs are the correct ones and check coil packs for cracks or burning marks

Hi easiest way 2 check for air leaks on engine, spray a little bit of easy start round the inlet manifold, if rpm climbs u have a leak! Just don't spray any near air filter.

Thought i'd give and update. Checked for air leaks. Could not find any. Cleaned etm and this issue seems to have disappeared. Need to drive more before i can say this was definitely the culprit.

As you have the non Turbo engine clean the ETM out once per year as it only takes 20 mins, I do this to my V70 each year - Mike

I thought i'd clean it once it starts acting up again. Have you managed to keep all etm related issues away just by cleaning the thing regularly? Or is replacement inevitable? As always thanks for replying and have a good day

I had replacement non contact angle sensor fitted to the broken ETM and it has been fine for the past four years but I still give it a clean each year to prevent carbon build up - Mike
