Default 1995 940SE 2.3 LPT Auto Estate Problems - help please

Can anyone please advise me:

- why the engine occasionally dies while driving? It will always restart immediately. There are no fault codes displayed after this happens.

- how to replace a bulb behind the heater controls? The left and centre controls are illuminated, but the right knob (temperature) and the a/c and recirculate buttons are not. I have got as far as removing the 4 screws that hold the assembly in place, but there are 2 steel brackets under the bottom screws that stop me from pulling the assembly out.

Many thanks for all suggestions.

This has happened on my 740 lpt for ages. It was fixed for a while, but i'm not sure i'm convincd about the reasons given for the fix.

i wonder if my scenario matches yours?

if i'm driving at low throttle with no acceleration (especially up a gradient) and then i have to make a sudden stop, it will stall. similarly coasting up to, say, a roundabout expecting to go through and then have to jab on the brakes same.

I was told to spray carb cleaner around the choke mechanism, but someone pointed to the ECU ( this was replaced around the same time 4 years ago after the car did a big DIE).

The problem is manifesting itself sporadically but has been quite frequent over the last few days (say half doz times). However a scary once whilst just driving straight at around 20mph

The stalling's entirely random but usually at low speeds.

Correction to the bulb scenario - there s no light at all behind the heater controls!

My 92 940SE has done this twice.

Once when slowing down at a roundabout - car just ground to a halt - after a few moments spent wondering what was wrong and checking the fuel gauge etc it started no problem and ran OK. Lamda light was on though - cleared this by disconecting the battery.

About one week later did the same thing again - though this time no lamda light.

Stuck some injector / fuel cleaner in the petrol tank and thought that I would wait and see what happened.

This last episode was about 2 months ago - since then no problems - commuting about 36 miles daily with a couple of 500 mile + trips in the meantime. Wonder what it is? None of my 240's have ever done this!

Yes the Lamda always comes on momentarily before the stall, in fact it will catch if I can whip it into neutral (auto box) quick enough but this would normally be a pretty dangerous option as I am often trying to avoid a collision in a lane or at a roundabout

The problem with autos is that you cant rev the engine if moving slowly it begins to stall. With some old (and knackered) cars Ive been able to get out of everyones way by revving the engine and slipping the clutch to keep things moving.
