V90/960 oil consumption
I have a 1998 57,000 miler V90 with the 204bhp straight six B6304FS1 engine, which presumably was fitted to earlier 960s?. After a string of three 4 cylinder B230 engines (without turbo, LPT and HPT)in previous cars, none of which used any oil (including the 180,000 miler non turbo car) I find that my 3,000 miles in this vehicle over the last couple of months since I acquired it has used maybe one third of a litre. There is no visible sign of leakage/burning. This is not a high consumption of course, but I'm not used to this!
Is this engine range considered to be an oil user? Any comment please? Regards Stuart |

My 218,000 mile 960 (Sep 91) uses about half a pint every 3 months, less if I'm not spending most of my time cruising up and down motorways.
Out of interest, I run mine on fully synthetic oil, and change it every year (about every 8,000/10,000 miles). Matt |

Thanks for the response Matt. What engine is yours? I had a '91 960 Turbo, and that was the B230FT from memory. It certainly was a 4 cylinder turbo, not a 6 (neither V6 nor straight 6).

RE: V90/960 oil consumption
Hi Stuart
I have a 1995 960 with 46000 miles, its the B6304S engine. I have never had to top the oil up; the level always stays the same. The oil has been changed on average every 5000 miles along with the filter; the longest interval was 6720 miles. I have been using fully synthetic since 31000 miles. Cheers, Mark |

Mine's a 204 Hp straight 6 24v, with the pre '92 block (so no cracks - at least not after 218,000 miles .....)

I have a 3.0 straight six in my 960 and now I do not need to top it up between services. It did have a leak from the rear oil seal that gradually produced a lake on the drive. Cost lots of money to replace the seal!

Thanks for that Mike. No oil visible here, so hopefully not your undoubtedly expensive problem. I'm beginninig to wonder if it is unduly sensitive to even slightly high oil levels - burning off the excess? I have to confess that it had been overfilled by a small amount, maybe 1/4 inch or so.

My 960 3.o litre used abot 0.5 litres every 4000 miles. No signs of leaks and no uther symptons. Volvo Sweden say this is within toleranace levels unless there are other symptons. I just accepted it and lived with it. My s80 uses no oil at all between 10000 mile services.
