Good advice here I only had one 480. It was a turbo 1.7 with auto-box. I'm guessing you'd not be heading down the turbo route with a teenager to insure and not auto either.
It was not without gremlins, electrical faults very common due to water leaks which 480's are renowned for. Also those turbo pipes do perish and are very expensive to replace.... Sort of £1 per inch or there abouts.... .

That said it was a great fun car we loved it.

Onto my point, my the 1.7 block was solid. I bought it with 100k on and sold it at 148k . A young enthusiast bought it. It had stood for the best part of 3 months on my drive. He jumped in it and drove it over 300 miles to his home. His report back was, "thanks Paul she pulls like a train" . That was in 2009. I'm still in touch and the car is in daily use. Now looks much better than when I had it too!
So high mileage is not a worry.... Make sure whatever you buy has a good service history . Oh as mentioned don't rule out a Diesal....... Good luck

Thanks guys.
This is a long term idea, the Almera is still going and the son has yet to start his driving lessons. As I admitted at the start I'd sort of discounted a 480 as I thought it was RWD so quite pleased to discover they're FWD and from your comments they're reasonable to live with. Any older car is going to need looking after but nobody has come up with a major generic fault, as for rust the wheel arch problem is one I was aware of but one of my 850's was just as bad so I would have to wait for a solid one.

hi.

over the years ive had 4 of the 440s and 2 of the 460s and they have always been a sound and reliable car and parts are pretty cheap, the last volvo 440 i bought is my current car i bought it for £345 moted til march 2014 and taxed until dec 2013. one owner from new with full service history with 65k on the clock.
so i am more than happy with mine but mine to has the dreaded rust on the rear wheel arches same as many.

cheers

davy
