Just to follow up on this, having had a blowout and a puncture with the 205s, I decided to switch back to 215s, only this time with Kumhos on the front too, and the problem went away. So just the ****e tyres the previous owner had on the car. Remaining 205 went in the boot and takes up less space to, uh, boot, so a happy ending all round.

I wondered about this as I run 215/45/17s on my 99 V70 with no issues whatsoever.
Only reason I done this was they were cheaper to buy than the 205s
Didn't think there was any odds on the clearance between these two models ??

Well, there's 10mm of a difference.

The Kumhos don't catch the arches though, so it must depend on the construction of the tyre. Kumhos don't have a full rim protection flange, so that could have been the problem on previous tyres.
