Spoke to Volvo parts today and price for a glow plug relay is £102 inc vat, but he also said that his master technician has very very rarely had to change one !

Don't know which way to go now, it's not the stuttering that worries me it's the loud clattering/chattering and the clouds of black smoke on acceleration,

Just one thing to mention, took daughter back to uni last night, it did'nt improve when it got hot and it was averaging between 80 & 90 mpg
Then on the return journey, like flicking a switch it ran like a dream

Totally Baffled

Any thoughts anyone

cheers

Todays Update

Car is now becoming undrivable, shaking , shuddering etc, feels and sounds like it's only running on 3 cylinders or less! or possibly starved of fuel !!
Stationary it will rev freely round to 4000 rpm plus, but driving it will only go smooth-ish if I just tickle the throttle
I haven't touched anything so I imagine the codes will be as previous

Any ideas

cheers

I am experiencing similar problems with my 2004 V50 2.0 diesel manual. I don't think I'm getting the black smoke, etc. And have only had the "Engine System Service Required" message on the dash once. However, I did have a problem a few months ago which was almost the same. On looking in the engine bay I noted that one of the connections from fuel line to one of the injectors was a little loose. Quick tighten and the problem disappeared for months. Unfortunately, even though this seems almost identical as the one I had before, when I went to "quick fix" the injector again it seems fine.

In short, I would maybe suggest a fuel connected problem? It seems to me that either a lack of fuel on occasion, or air in the fuel line is causing my problems. And they seem very similar indeed to yours!

I will be keeping a close eye on this thread to see what solution you come up with. Likewise, I will let you know if I remedy my issue in the near future.

Good luck!

same sort of symptoms as you - also started suddenly as overtaking -
and the codes i have are

0380 glow plug relay - dtc active -- permanent fault
0002 fuel vol control valve -dtc not active -- intermittent fault (this was there before problem started)
0092 fuel pressure control valve -signal too high -- intermittent fault

I have lots of air bubbles in fuel line so maybe fuel codes due to lack of fuel to pump?
I was thinking maybe glow plug relay as well but looks like only main dealer stocks it so probably expensive to change if not the solution

hope someone can help as like you i am struggling to sort this one out

in case it helps -took it to indy volvo specialist who found tcv wiring fault and crack in fuel filter housing fixed both and now running ok

Big thank you to all who gave suggestions and help

So, injectors back, cleaned and tested, all reading a bit low but ok.
Back in car and again when fully warm it runs like a dream but is still lumpy and stuttery from cold.
It's been suggested that I try changing the coolant temp sensor as these often give a similar problem on Passats
will keep you posted
cheers
