Just got an 850 tdi off a friend I have been using it off and on over the past couple of years for short trips, the ol' Volvo has been resting for 3 and 4 months at a time. Two days after I purchased it one of the engine management lights has come on an orange light saying there is something wrong with the electrics in the engine- it runs OK could it just be a dodgy sender unit?or a job for a main dealer. any thoughts?

You really do need to plug it in.

Could be anything from mass air to lamda. Some dealerships will give a free diagnostic code reading. They will only charge for a diagnostic (i.e. telling you what they think is wrong). From the codes you will be able to work out what sensors are throwing up the EML. If you can fix it yourself and do a cold reset (disconnect battery) to turn off EML. It will stay off unless the fault has not been found.
