Will auto box from a 1998 C70 fit a 1999 V70 TDi?
The auto box on my V70 TDi expired about 2 weeks ago.
It is an AW 50-42LE box. The ATF fluid level was OK, I checked regularly using the proper method, and there was no water in the fluid. After extensive research I have come to the conclusion that the screen filter fitted in the box is partially clogged preventing the fluid returning to the sump quickly enough for the demands of the ATF pump. To change this filter is a gearbox out job as the box has no removable sump. I have found a UK source for that screen filter - £43.50 - and I might fit a new one to the replacement box just to be safe. Assuming little or no risk in doing so. My car now has ~ 189,000 miles on it and it would seem prudent to change the box for one that has not come from a scrapyard, has far less miles. and might be available to me. That replacement box comes from a 1998 C70 auto and I am awaiting confirmation that it is an AW 50-42LE. Just this morning a possible problem arose in my head. The replacement box will have been removed from a Volvo block and I will want to fit it to a ( Audi ) TDi block. Does anyone know whether the bolt layouts for the box to block interface will be the same and whether any other physical differences that would prevent fitting will be present - ie: starter motor mounts etc. If they are not the same what complications might there be in swapping the torque convertor housings between the two auto boxes. I realise that an auto box swap at home is not for the feighnt hearted ( I will have help ), mostly due to the 65 KG weight of the box and manouvering it in place onto the dowels on the engine block. I believe the manual box is about 20 KG lighter and easier to do. I appreciate that there might be one or two other differences with the two boxes regarding sensors ( road speed for one ) but if the basic box is mainly the same then I could fit the sensors from my box to the replacement. One other possible difference would be the final drive ratio but it looks as though both boxes have the same ratio from information provided. I would not consider converting the car to a manual. Any tips, help or information would be welcome. Thanks - Colin

The starter on the TDI is on the other side of the box. Galaxie390 on here found this out the hard way. I think you can swap the bellhousing but because the gearbox is short with two layshafts due to the 5 cylinder design you have to effectively split the box in half to do it.
