Power upgrade via ECU map?
EFI is my hobby. I have installed Megasquirt ECUs on several Rover V8 and Jaguar V12's. My most recent project was converting a Jensen Interceptor Mk3 (7.2L) to EFI.
From these projects I have learnt the max power comes at an AFR of about 13. My 2.4 Normally aspirated Volvo seems to run at 14.7 under ALL conditions. Is there then not be untapped potential to be had with a fuel map that calls for richer AFRs around full throttle?

The 2.4 can be updated via software to a 2.4i... Software used to be available from Heico but you can probably get it from BSR, Rica and co.

Do you know what the difference is between the 2.4 and 2.4i?

That is not insignificant! What hardware / software is needed to upgrade the ECU?

Just software. The 2.4 is a detuned 2.4i so mechanical bits and bobs are equal. It really is only the mapping which differs.

Now it sounds like the 2.4 and 2.4i are two different models. My car says "2.4i" on the boot. Does that mean its already the upgraded model?

Yes, that is why it is important to write the ENTIRE type and not simply "2.4"
The S40/V50 and C70 were sold as 2.4 OR 2.4i. If you already have a 2.4i then you won't get a pony more...

I could be wrong of course but I still believe that with richer mixtures towards full throttle, there should be "more".
Thankfully this Volvo is my wife's town commuter. I have a 7.2L Jensen Interceptor (EFI'ed) to entertain me!
