Annoying clicking noise - V40 R-Design
My V40 is nearly a year old, but about 6 months ago it started making a clicking sound that appears to be coming from the CD player area of the dash. It sounds similar to the noise a CD laser head makes if it can't read a disc or a relay opening/closing quickly. The sound occurs every time if the car has been left for several hours, lasts for 15 minutes and the car needs to be moving greater than 10-15mph. I've never used the CD player, but did test a CD to see if the unit was faulty. The noise still happens with the media system turned off.
2 months ago I took the car back to my local dealer because I wanted them to troubleshoot the issue before it went in for its first service. They knew it needed to be test driven for the fault to occur. 4 hours later I went back to collect the car to be told that they couldn't reproduce the fault. When asked if they had driven the car they said no! On Friday I took my car into a different dealer to carry out the first service. I've arranged for the car to be with them for a week as I don't want it back until it is fixed. The drive to the dealer was 15 minutes and the noise was still present when I arrived. I managed to get a technician to jump in for a quick drive, but typically the noise did not occur. Today (Wednesday) I rang the garage to make sure they had identified the problem, but was told that the car had been serviced, test driven and they cannot detect any clicking noise. The service manager wanted to test drive it again though. They called back this afternoon to say they still could not hear any clicking noise, but will try again tomorrow. I'm wondering now if there is a small fan or servo motor behind the cd player that could be making the noise? There is a post here, for a Toyota that seems to have exactly the same issue. Hopefully Volvo will fix the issue, but I can't say I'm that impressed with the standard of service so far, with either garage. |

Picked the car up after it being left with the dealer for a week. Still had the noise. Took it straight back and got the service manager to drive it with me. He could now hear the noise. Re-booked the car in for another 2 days.
I was sceptical about the solution, when I picked the car up they said they had removed the trim, padded it out and put it back. Looks like its done the job though - no more clicking noise! |
