Default engine emmission light

I have an orange light shaped like an engine that comes on now and again on the dash board. In the hand book it says that it is an emmission light and to return to a Volvo dealer. Can anyone help with this Thanksand if so is it a possible diy job.

I have a S40 SE 2.4l geartronic 04 auto and it's done the same thing. It's now gone off not sure really what to do with it or does the black gaffa tape come out to cover the warning light?

Mine came on yesterday together with the message that it needed an emissions service.
I took it in to local volvo specialist today and the computer told him that one of the sensors had failed either before or after the cat. Drive it for a few days and if it does not go away take it back for a new one to be fitted.
The car is running fine so don't know what to do as I was told could be an expensive part, but have not checked yet

I think that the engine shaped warning light is generally associated with an engine fault rather than an emission issue. On my s80 I had a triangle shape one come up when I had an emission problem. I also had a message pop up in the information panel saying fix at next service. On all the other cars I've had the engine management light generally means that the ECU is missing at least one signal from a sensor. If the engine appears to be running OK I would suggest you take the car somewhere and get the fault codes read, that will tell you what the problem is. If it does turn out to be a lambda (O2) sensor then its a job you could easily do yourself

I'd take it for a good hard thrash for at least half an hour to get the engine and exhaust system good and hot to see if that clears it through.

(Obviously I'm not suggesting you do it on icy country roads)

My light and emission service message came on today just as I was going to have the car MOT.
I put it through the MOT and it passed the emission test and Mot. I'm going to drive the car for a few days to see if it clears.
Any idea where the sensors are or any other reason for the message?

Get a code reader connected to the cars OBD-II port and see what codes are stored, without codes trouble shooting on one of these motors is rather costly as the light could be illuminated for one (or more) of hundreds of different reasons.

Even a generic OBD-II reader from e-bay will work for engine codes, they cost around £6 if you have an Android based mobile phone which acts as the display for the code reader - Mike

What is it about this Section of the Forum where everyone wants to post on it regardless of what Volvo they own. For those that DON'T have a Volvo in the following groups S80 '06> / V70 '07> / XC70 '07> you might get more help by posting in your own relevant Section.

Of course we (in this Section for S80 '06> / V70 '07> / XC70 '07> Volvos) will always help if we can but it does get confusing when at least 3 out of the 8 posts so far on this Thread have similar problems but the vehicles are not referenced to this Section. The advice offer by Mike still stands, an OBD-II reader is a useful bit of kit regardless what vehicle you have.

I had the orange Engine light come on 2 weeks ago as said before no difference in drive ect, but today I had a Volvo dealer Health check and they checked it and it cleared itself. They said if it illuminates again its the C02 sensor at Fault. (Volvo v70 3.0 awd 2009)
