Hello
I have just bought a 240 GLE 1984 I run this at present on 4star LRP. Does any body know what alternatives there are for running on unleaded, apart from the twin headgasket option once LRP is phased out Thanks CD |

I used to have 1993 model and was told by two Volvo agents that all Volvos will run on unleaded without modification. However, it will shorten the life of older (whatever that means) carburettors because of wear or corrosion. I sold it before experimenting, but know of other people who ran/run their Volvos on unleaded without trouble.
For complete peace of mind why not use unleaded with an additive? I also have a Triumph 2000 which needs valve seat protection and desn't like the reduced Octane rating of unleaded. I have used Millers VSP for 2 years now. This gives valve protection and octane boost, and works out cheaper than using LRP. |

Officially (Volvo) some of the 240 range could run on unleaded and some could not depending on model year and engine spec.
Valve seat degredation was not a problem as all engines were fitted with hardened valve seats for the US market (and others)unfortunately because the UK (at the time) were using 'proper' leaded 4* the engines shipped over here were a higher compression ratio in a lot of cases.Because of this the oficial line is that these higher compression types can not be run on unleaded (95oct) therefore the options are super unleaded or LRP. Unofficially I have known of several cars to run quite happily on 95 with apparently no problems. It is up to you to try it, if no 'pinking' occurs and it does not overheat it will probably be ok. If you need to know the official options you have for your particular car, e-mail me the full v.i.n. number and I will check. Paul Clifton. 200 series reg. keeper VOC paul@clifton30.freeserve.co.uk
