Long crank rough idle Euro III D5 53 plate
Hi all,
Here's where I'm at: Cranking 5-10 seconds. Rough idle at start 75% of time. Clears up when engine warms. Sometimes after a run I'd go to start after 5 Mins off and lumpy but on a hot engine. Here's the rub: It seemed to correspond with using redex diesel. I bought this on a whim. Is it possible this is the cause or is this coincidence? I'm going to run it near empty and fill up, and monitor next week. Sounds like an injector is on the way out. There's a lot of oil around injector 3... Kindly Mike |

Injectors carry diesel, so if you have oil, maybe your rocker cover gasket is on its way out. You need to clean the area and monitor it regularly to find the source.
There's a chance that Redex has dislodged crud in your fuel tank and your fuel filter is now pretty blocked, restricting fuel flow for smooth starting and running. Fortunately, this is one of the cheaper and easier jobs to do and a good starting point. You may get lucky.

If you put a fuel additive in the tank it can free up so much crud that it blocks the fuel filter. So I would start by checking the fuel filter and seals first.
If you have been using cheap diesel and the fuel filter is good, then try using Liqui Moly diesel purge. Just drain the fuel filter and top up. It's a very effective direct feed injection cleaner. If it's not the filter or a gummed up injector, then it's time to get the codes read. Top of the list would be MAF sensor, which can be checked by seeing if disconnecting it improves the performance. Some diesels don't start too well when cold if the glow plugs are kaput. It's easy to check them, as the resistance across one should only be a few ohms and a broken one will be near open circuit at several K.

To be sure you need to do an injector leak off test to find which one is faulty. It need only be one. That will usually cause long cranking time, It could also be the pump in the tank that feeds the fuel thru to the front, but pehaps not if it runs ok after its started.
The engine breather pipe is close to injector 2, worth a check its not that leaking. John |

I'll clean the rocker cover etc... Monitor the oil/black mess and do a leak off test and replace filter.
Car runs good when it's normal so I bet the tank pump is OK and the maf is OK but if the above doesn't help I'll be sure to investigate these. Currently got 10w40 oil. Normally 5w40 used. Changed every 6-8k. Thanks guys! |
